‘I was a victim’: ‘My child was taken from me’

Children are being left without a mum or dad, their lives destroyed, when a man was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the murder of his estranged wife.

The 26-year-old man, named as Ahmed, was convicted of murder and is serving a life sentence.

He has been in custody since last November when he was charged with the murder.

In his first interview with Al Jazeera, the father of the victim said: ‘It’s a very difficult situation for me and my children.

We lost a child.’

He said that the court had imposed a death sentence against the man because he had been a good father to the children, but he said he had never imagined that his wife would be killed by her ex-husband.’

I was so shocked.

I had no idea that this could happen,’ he said.

In November, Ahmed’s ex-wife, who had two children, was allegedly raped and killed.

The case has been complicated by the fact that Ahmed had two other children.

His wife and children had to go into hiding for weeks following the killing.’

They (the children) were scared and they couldn’t go to school because they were afraid they would get killed,’ he told Al Jazeera.’

After they were in hiding, my wife came back to visit me and she was crying.’

Al Jazeera’s Shafqat Hussain reports from New Delhi, India.
